So far, the league has been very successful in obtaining its goals. Since its inaugural season the league has accounted for 28 MHSAA State Championships, the average penalty minutes per game is the lowest in the state and several players from the league have continued their hockey careers at the junior hockey level, at the collegiate level (75 Division I college players) and a few (30) have made it to the professional level. In the 2000 – 2001 season all three state championships came from the MIHL – Division I – Catholic Central, Division II – Grosse Pointe North and Division III - Cranbrook. This occurred again in the 2014 – 2015 season when – Division I – Catholic Central, Division II – Brother Rice and Division III – Cranbrook swept the MHSAA Championships. The MIHL was founded by Birmingham Brother Rice, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood, Detroit Catholic Central and Port Huron Northern. The league expanded quickly with the additions of Grosse Pointe North (2000-2001), University of Detroit Jesuit (2002-2003) and De La Salle (2007-2008). The league evened out to eight teams with the addition of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (2009 - 2010). The last round of expansion occurred in 2011 – 2012 and included Trenton High School, a storied program and no stranger to the MIHL teams, and Wyandotte High School, fresh off their first MHSAA Division II Championship. During 2000 – 2001 season the inaugural MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase - The Premier Event of the High School Hockey Season -was held. The goal of the Showcase was to get the best teams and the best players in one location to showcase the best of Michigan high school hockey. It has become the standard by which all other showcases are measured.
